What's Included In Virtuo Biology: Weekly Labs @ Home

Meet Your Instructor

My name is Brandon Carlisle and I'm a certified science teacher with nearly a decade of full-time classroom teaching experience in a leading-edge STEM school and two top-ranked private schools. I've mentored students to win state science fairs and developed project-based science curriculum that is taught around the country.

My little sister was homeschooled and it pained me that while my students were getting these engaging, innovative, hands-on experiences, she was only watching her teacher do them--there was NO SUPPORT for my parents to provide her with those labs at home, even though they were paying thousands of dollars for an online school! I asked my parents why they weren't doing labs on the side, tried to help them find resources online, and was floored by how difficult it was to wade through the millions of resources on the internet and million more science videos on Youtube. How could anyone do this on their own without the experience of running labs in the classroom? I created Virtuo Learning to change all that.

I've been running hands-on labs, activities, and projects in my classroom every week for hundreds of students. I've worked with students after school on projects and innovation challenges and taken students across the country for science fairs where they've won literally hundreds of thousands of dollars in awards. And guess what the #1 thing I've learned throughout my career is...?  👉  You don't need to be a science expert or have a lab full of expensive equipment and dangerous chemicals to provide your student with hands-on experiences that challenge them to think deeply, be creative, take risks, and build confidence.

The truth is you CAN provide your students with the same quality of hands-on labs that students are doing at the best high schools in the country. And I'm here to help guide YOU just as much as I am here to teach YOUR STUDENT! I hope you're as excited as I am for you to begin this journey! I host a weekly Q&A call every week in our private community (kind of like virtual office hours or group tutoring) and I hope to meet you soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

What grade is this program for?

Virtuo Biology is primarily aimed at 8th-10th grade students as that is when most programs teach Biology. That said, advanced 7th-graders have done these labs and there is a lot of value for 11th or 12th grade students, as well. The program is designed to meet students where they are: more advanced students will be able to design more scientifically rigorous experiments and create more rigorous projects without feeling like the program is below their level. This program is not designed to satisfy the required labs for AP or IB Biology at this time.

When does the program start & how long do I have access?

The first lab drops on Tuesday, October 3rd and a new lab, activity, or project will drop every Tuesday thereafter, with a week off in December and a week off in April, concluding at the end of June. With 1-year access, your student will have access to the labs until October 3rd, 2024. Missed a few weeks during the year? You will still have access to them during summer 2024. With monthly access, you will be billed on the first of each month to access the program for the next 30 days.

What about materials? How much will they cost?

A basic guide to lab equipment with an order list is already posted and you can preview it here: Basic Lab Equipment. I have also posted Materials List #1, which will cover the first few months. As you can see, many of the materials listed are those that you may already have at home. I have aimed to keep the total cost of materials for the whole year to under $300. This could be quite a bit less or more depending on a few factors, like what type of microscope you opt to purchase, how material-intensive your student's project designs are, and what you already own. I have included multiple options and my opinion on each to make sure this program is accessible for many different budgets.

How much time do the labs take each week? How involved should I expect to be as a parent?

Each week's videos and lab, activity, or project should take about an hour, provided that you have collected the materials ahead of time. That said, students who want to extend their learning can certainly take longer, set up more advanced experiments, and devote more time to their projects. At Virtuo Learning, we understand that different homeschooling parents have different amounts of time to devote to their student's schooling. As such, we strongly advise that you be available to supervise the labs for safety reasons, but your level of involvement beyond that is up to you and your student. Our videos and lab guides are designed to be clear enough for most students to follow without an adult guiding them through each step.

Can't I find labs like this on Google/Youtube?

Yes and no! While a number of the labs, activities, and projects in this program are unique to my classes, some of the labs and activities in this program are on the internet for free, sure! The real value you are getting from this course is the convenience of a certified science teacher vetting all the labs in this program, the support of guided videos for each lab, and the community and weekly Q&A's to set you and your student up for success.

Is Virtuo Biology: Weekly Labs @ Home a complete curriculum? Is it accredited?

Virtuo Biology: Weekly Labs @ Home is not a complete curriculum, but is designed to provide the hands-on labs and activities to go alongside any Biology curriculum of your choice! Two caveats here: first, it is impossible for our weekly program to match the sequence (e.g., what topics are taught in what order) of every possible biology curriculum. That said, I have taught four different biology curricula in ten years and evaluated plenty of others. Most curricula follow a very similar sequence and I will do my best to make sure that every week is accessible no matter if it covers the exact same material that your student is learning in their biology curriculum. Second, we are not eligible for accreditation as an institution of education at this time.

Is Virtuo Biology: Weekly Labs @ Home a Christian or secular curriculum?

At Virtuo Learning, we prefer the term faith-neutral. Since we are providing the labs and activities vs. providing the content, our labs are designed to complement and enhance any curriculum of your choice. We understand and respect that families have a variety of different reasons for choosing to homeschool their children. Our labs and materials are more focused on helping your student get active in their learning rather than teaching the content through a specific lens.

Is there a guarantee?

Absolutely! Virtuo Biology: Weekly Labs @ Home has a 7-Day Satisfaction Guarantee. If you are not completely SATISFIED by the Virtuo Biology: Weekly Labs @ Home Program, then contact us within 7 Days for a full refund, no questions asked!
